Gateway to Change:

Why This Year’s SSWAA Conference Matters More Than Ever

This year, as school social workers from across the nation gather in St. Louis, Missouri, we’re not just attending another conference—we’re stepping into a transformative experience centered around our theme: “Gateway to Change.”

It’s no coincidence that we’re hosting this year’s event in St. Louis, home of the iconic Gateway Arch. Historically, the Arch symbolized expansion, possibility, and movement toward a new frontier. Today, it serves as a powerful metaphor for the moment we’re living in as school social workers: a profession standing at the threshold of meaningful, systemic change.

Just as St. Louis represents a gateway to new horizons, this year’s conference invites us to explore new pathways in practice, advocacy, and collective action.

A City With a Story—and Lessons for Our Work

St. Louis is known for its rich cultural history, community pride, and the resilience of its people. But it’s also a city that has been shaped by deep systemic challenges—racial inequities, educational disparities, and social justice movements that captured national attention.

For school social workers, St. Louis represents both the complexity of the work we do and the urgency of our mission: supporting students, families, and schools in navigating systems that are often inequitable, fragmented, or under-resourced. This year’s location reminds us of why our field exists—and why our work is essential.

Keynotes That Meet the Moment

This year’s keynote speakers are diving into issues that mirror the needs of our communities:

Systemic Racism and Educational Equity

Mental Health Infrastructure in Schools

Crisis Response and Trauma-Informed Practices

Policy Advocacy and the Future of School Social Work

These aren’t abstract topics—they are the daily realities of the students and families we serve. Each keynote is designed to give school social workers the tools, frameworks, and courage needed to create systemic change at the school, district, and community levels.

Living the SSWAA Mission Together

At its core, SSWAA’s mission is to empower school social workers, elevate our role in education, and advance the mental health and academic success of all students. “Gateway to Change” aligns directly with this purpose.

This year’s conference will help us:

  • Strengthen our professional voice

  • Build capacity for sustainable systems change

  • Sharpen our clinical and advocacy skills

  • Rekindle our passion for student-centered, trauma-informed, and equitable practice

  • Connect deeply with colleagues who understand the weight—and the joy—of this work

By the time you leave St. Louis, you won’t just feel informed. You’ll feel activated

Stepping Through the Gateway

Just as the Gateway Arch stands tall as a symbol of courage and forward vision, this year’s conference is an invitation to step boldly into the next stage of our profession. Whether you are a new practitioner or a seasoned leader, this is your moment to learn, reflect, and lead.

We hope you’ll join us in St. Louis as we walk together through the Gateway to Change—ready to transform our schools, uplift our students, and strengthen the future of school social work across the nation.

See you at the Arch. 💛
