A PURPOSEFUL PAUSE
March is School Social Work Month, and it offers an important opportunity to say something clearly and confidently: school social workers are trained professionals doing highly skilled work.
The challenges facing students, families, and schools are complex. Addressing mental health needs, navigating systems, responding to crisis, supporting equity, and building meaningful connections require more than good intentions—they require education, ethical grounding, and specialized training.

School social workers bring all of that to their roles every day.
Yet too often, our expertise is misunderstood or minimized. Our work may be described in overly simple terms, or our roles stretched beyond recognition. This month’s A Purposeful Pause is a reminder—both to ourselves and to those around us—that this profession exists for a reason.
You are trained to assess systems, intervene across tiers, advocate for students and families, and hold the complexity of human experience within educational spaces. That training matters. Your professional identity matters.
Let's say it loudly. Put it on repeat. Let's continue to show up day after day to make our services seen and impact undeniable. This work requires expertise—and school social workers bring it! We are trained for this!

As we celebrate School Social Work Week, March 1-7, and School Social Work Month throughout March, I invite you to take pride in your expertise and to name it out loud. When we affirm our training, we strengthen not only our individual practice, but the future of the profession itself.
ABOUT THIS SERIES
A Purposeful Pause is a monthly message from the Executive Director, created to offer a moment of pause, reflection, and intentional forward movement for the school social work field.
Each month, we focus on one idea that reflects both the realities and the possibilities of our profession. These messages are intentionally shared across formats to meet members where they are and reinforce a timely, consistent, values-driven narrative.
A Purposeful Pause is grounded in the belief that progress does not happen through urgency alone, but through shared purpose, collective effort, and steady leadership. Together, we take a pause to reflect—and then we move our profession forward.
