Building the Future of School Social Work: Inside SSWAA's Strategic Plan
Behind every conference, webinar, advocacy initiative, and member resource is something members may not always see—a dedicated group of volunteers working together to strengthen the future of school social work.
Through its Strategic Plan, the School Social Work Association of America (SSWAA) is investing in initiatives that will help advance the profession for years to come. From strengthening graduate education and promoting greater consistency across states to developing future leaders, these efforts are laying the foundation for a stronger profession and a stronger Association.
In a recent series of conversations, SSWAA President Michelle Alvarez sat down with committee and task force leaders to provide members with an inside look at this important work—and why it matters.
Preparing the Next Generation of School Social Workers
The future of school social work begins with how future professionals are educated.
One of SSWAA's strategic priorities is exploring ways to strengthen support for Master of Social Work (MSW) programs that prepare school social workers. As Committee Chair Kari Butera explained, the committee has spent the past year researching accreditation models, meeting with national organizations, and building relationships that can help elevate school social work within graduate education. Rather than rushing toward one solution, the committee has intentionally focused on understanding the landscape and identifying opportunities that will have the greatest long term impact. One exciting step has been working with the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) to pursue greater recognition for school social work as a specialized area of practice—a move that could increase visibility for the profession within graduate education.
Creating Greater Consistency Across the Profession
Another strategic initiative addresses a challenge familiar to many practitioners: school social work requirements vary widely from state to state.
Jennifer Murphy, Chair of SSWAA's Eligibility Requirements Task Force, shared how the group has analyzed requirements across the country with the goal of identifying a "gold standard" that states can reference as they strengthen preparation for school social workers.
The task force recognizes that meaningful recommendations must be shaped by those working in the field. That's why member feedback will play an important role before recommendations are finalized and shared with state education leaders.
Ultimately, this work isn't about creating unnecessary uniformity—it's about strengthening the profession while helping ensure students everywhere have access to highly qualified school social workers.
Developing Tomorrow's Leaders
Strong professions require strong leadership.
That's why another area of SSWAA's Strategic Plan focuses on building a robust leadership pipeline through the Nominations Committee.
Committee Co-Chairs Jennifer Murphy and Kembrie Farrow shared how this year's nominations process became more transparent, intentional, and engaging through candidate interviews, orientation sessions, and opportunities for members to meet candidates before voting.
Perhaps the committee's most important message is that leadership doesn't belong to only a few people.
Leadership begins when members choose to become involved.
Whether serving on a committee, volunteering for a task force, sharing expertise, or eventually pursuing elected leadership, every member has something valuable to contribute.
