Resilience, Reframed.

A PURPOSEFUL PAUSE

Resilience is a word we hear often in school social work. It’s usually framed as an individual trait—something we’re expected to summon when the work gets hard. It is often described as the ability to bounce back after a challenge or set back. It is viewed as the ability to adapt in the face of opposition. It can be framed as coping when presented with tough circumstances. But this month’s A Purposeful Pause invites us to think about resilience differently.

Resilience in our profession is not about endurance alone. It’s about adaptation, connection, and collective strength. It’s about knowing when to lean on a colleague, when to use a framework or a data point to guide next steps, and when to pause before moving forward. It is about growing through challenges, learning from tough situations, and accepting change (and accepting that which we do not currently have the power to change). As a professional, one can experience and validate a full range of emotions while also maintaining a positive mindset - knowing growth, change, and advancement are possible.

School social workers are resilient not because they do everything themselves, but because they are trained to navigate systems, build partnerships, and respond thoughtfully to complexity. That kind of resilience is learned, practiced, and strengthened over time.

As demands continue to grow in schools, reframing resilience matters. When resilience becomes synonymous with "staying strong" and being self-sufficient, which can lead to isolation or burnout, we all lose. When resilience is shared—supported by teams, professional identity, realistic self-care, and clear roles—it becomes sustainable.

This month, I encourage you to notice where resilience is already showing up in your work: in collaboration, in boundaries, and in moments when you choose strategy over urgency.

That is resilience, reframed.

ABOUT THIS SERIES

A Purposeful Pause is a monthly message from the Executive Director, created to offer a moment of pause, reflection, and intentional forward movement for the school social work field.

Each month, we focus on one idea that reflects both the realities and the possibilities of our profession. These messages are intentionally shared across formats to meet members where they are and reinforce a timely, consistent, values-driven narrative.

A Purposeful Pause is grounded in the belief that progress does not happen through urgency alone, but through shared purpose, collective effort, and steady leadership. Together, we take a pause to reflect—and then we move our profession forward.
