Meet the Staff: Rebecca Oliver

Rebecca Oliver, LMSW

Rebecca Oliver is currently the Executive Director of the School Social Work Association of America (SSWAA). Mrs. Oliver is a past Board Member of SSWAA and has over 20 years experience providing social work services in the school setting.

Rebecca grew up in a suburb of Houston, Texas, and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from Baylor University. Following her college graduation, Rebecca went on to pursue a Master’s Degree in Social Work from the University of Texas at Austin, where she has been adjunct faculty and a field supervisor. Mrs. Oliver has particular interest in provision of services and program planning for at-risk youth, developing strong social, emotional, and behavioral supports for students, PBIS, SEL, service-learning, peer mediation, tolerance education, student leadership development, and enhancing parental involvement in schools.

In her personal time, Rebecca enjoys watching college football, singing, running with her schnoodle “Abby”, going to the movies, and shopping – especially at a good flea market.

Rebecca interviewed for the Associate Executive Director position in March and is very excited about this new role. Here is what Rebecca had to say about serving in a new capacity with SSWAA. “I am thrilled to be the new Executive Director of SSWAA and want to see SSWAA move forward in its impact as the national organization that specifically represents School Social Workers. School Social Workers do amazing work each and every day for students, families, staff, and in the school community. I believe that School Social Workers are a vital and necessary component of services offered to students and their families in order to promote strong social/emotional/behavioral development and to help reduce barriers to learning.

My vision for advancing SSWAA’s influence includes emphasis on membership, engagement, and expertise. I will be working with the Board and focus groups to strategically plan ways to impact our organization’s growth in membership. Obtaining and retaining members is the cornerstone to our organization and our members are who we represent. Engagement is equally important and I will be working to expand the use of committees and hope to recruit more SSWAA members to participate in an active, ongoing way in the day-to-day work of our organization. I also want to engage members through added networking opportunities and professional development opportunities.

Finally, SSWAA has many members who are experts in our field, in their states, and in their communities. My hope is to discover new ways to capitalize on the strengths of our members and to engage them in the work we are doing for our profession. I ask our members … will you join me? Together we can make incredible progress in the advancement of our profession.”
