There is growing recognition in today’s global economy that a high quality, comprehensive education is no longer just a pathway to opportunity – it is a prerequisite to success. Students must now possess not just academic knowledge and skills but also the individual and social competencies needed to effectively navigate the relationships and challenges of the modern world.
School board members have a responsibility to lead the way in securing a high quality education for each and every student in their district. Partnerships, Not Pushouts: A Guide for School Board Members on Community Partnerships for Student Success, a report released on April 22nd, by the Opportunity to Learn Campaign, highlights specific models of how school boards can better support students. School social workers play a key role in the community partnerships and coordinated services described in this report and should be leaders in this reform effort.
• School boards play a key role in setting the vision and tone for their local school systems. The new guide can serve as a blueprint for board members who wish to create a better-coordinated system of supports for children and their families.
• By partnering with key stakeholders and local service providers, school boards can ensure that all children benefit from a Personal Opportunity Plan that guarantees access to the resources and opportunities each child needs to succeed.
• From Oregon to Tennessee and from Maine to California, school districts and their board members are expanding opportunities and making a real difference in the lives of their students. It is time to build on these models and ensure every student in every school has a fair chance to flourish and succeed.
SSWAA encourages you to use these reports to advocate for yourself and your profession and remind your school boards and district leaders of your value and potential. Think of what could be accomplished if your school district could hire another school social worker?!
