9.0 AWARDS

(From SSWAA's Policy Manual 9/1/2012)

9.A SSWAA will recognize outstanding contributions to school social work practice at the Annual Conference.
9.A.1 All awards will be announced in September and nominations due in November. Awardees will be notified by January.

a) Executive Director will contact Awardee.
b) Executive Director will contact people responsible for nomination (eg. Dean, Supervisor).
c) Executive Director will submit article about awardee to local newspaper or university.
d) Executive Director will send email to nominees that did not receive award.
e) Award chair will contact award committee to thank them for their time and announce the winner.

9.A.2 Each committee will be chaired by a board member as determined by President and comprised of SSWAA members as determined by Chair

9.A.3 The awards may include:

a) The Gary Lee Schaffer Academic Contributions to School Social Work Award
b) The Randy A. Fisher Lifetime Career Achievement Award
c) School Social Worker of the Year (Master's Level) Award
d) School Social Worker of the Year (Bachelor's Level) Award
e) SSWAA Book Award

9.B Gary Lee Schaffer Award

9.B.1 Criteria: An outstanding School Social Work faculty member:

a) Has earned a Master of Social Work degree, or higher;
b) Holds an adjunct, assistant, associate or full-time professor position with a university;
c) Teaches school social work courses and/or has a recognizable research interest in School Social Work;
d) Has published a minimum of 4 articles related to school social work in peer reviewed journals;
e) Demonstrates a commitment to the field of school social work that extends beyond the expected duties of a faculty position;
f) and, is a current member of a state school social work organization and/or the School Social Work Association of America.

9.B.2 Summary of Process:
In states where a state school social work association exists, the state organization should forward a completed nomination form for Gary Lee Shaffer Award to SSWAA for consideration. In states where no state school social work organization exists, individuals may be nominated using this form. Nominations must be received by November 15th to be considered.

9.C Randy A. Fisher Career Achievement Award

9.C.1 Criteria:

a) Candidates should have a variety of experiences as a school social work practitioner, educator at the university/college level, author, presenter, and leadership (volunteer or employment) that spans a significant number of years.
b) Long term membership and leadership positions in state and national school social work associations.

9.C.2 Summary of Process:
In states where a state school social work association exists, the state organization should forward a completed nomination form for Randy A. Fisher Career Achievement Award to SSWAA for consideration. In states where no state school social work organization exists, individuals may be nominated using this form. Nominations must be received by November 15th to be considered.

9.D National School Social Worker of the Year Award – Master’s Level

9.D.1 Criteria:

a) Is currently practicing school social work as the date of nomination;
b) Has Master’s degree in Social Work from CSWE accredited university;
c) Has State School Social Work credential, if applicable, and/or a state social work license;
d) Is a member of SSWAA (for two years prior to being nominated);
e) Has two more years of experience as a school social worker;
f) Has demonstrated commitment t the profession that extends beyond the expected duties of the specific school social work position (e.g., development of programs, innovations, presentations, etc);
g) Has outstanding achievements in field of school social work on behalf of students, school personnel, and/or the community.

9.D.2 Summary of Process:
The School Social Work Association of America (SSWAA) is proud to announce the National School Social Worker of the Year Award. In states where a state school social work association exists, the state organization should forward a completed nomination form for Social Worker of the Year to SSWAA for consideration. In states where no state school social work organization exists, individuals may be nominated using this form. Nominations must be received by November 15th to be considered.

9.F SSWAA Book Award

9.F.1 Criteria Nomination is submitted by publisher   

a) Book must have a copyright a year before or of the same year as the nomination.
b) Publication written about or for school social workers.
c) Content makes a significant contribution to the body of knowledge of school social work. (see Award attachment in this manual)
d) Content demonstrates a clear application to practice.

9.F.2 The Book Award winner will be determined by a committee of board members and SSWAA members that will review and read the nominated books.
9.F.3 The awardee will be notified at least one month prior to the conference.
9.F.4 The award will be presented at the SSWAA National Conference to both the publisher and author.
9.F.5 The author will also be given a complimentary one-year membership to SSWAA.
