2013 Awardee: Dr. Michelle Alvarez

The winner of the 2013 Gary Lee Shaffer Award for Academic Contributions to the Field of School Social Work is Dr. Michelle Alvarez. Dr. Alvarez earned her MSW at University of Maryland in 1986 and her Ed.D. from Nova Southeastern University, Florida in 2004. She is an associate professor at Minnesota State University-Mankato. Dr. Alvarez has published numerous journal articles, edited 3 books, been awarded 4 grants or contracts, and given more than 12 presentation, including invited keynotes. She is editor in chief of Children in Schools as well as consulting editor on two other journals. Dr. Alvarez has over completed over 40 publications and 50 presentations. Dr. Alvarez’s scholarly contributions has truly informed school social work nationally and internationally and she is recognized as the expert and ‘go to’ person for other professionals.

Dr. Alvarez currently holds memberships in the School Social Work Association of America (2000-present) and the National Association of Social Workers and School Social Work Section (2000 – present).  She has been awarded, over the past few years a National Book Award given to Oxford University Press (2012), named one of 50 Heroes for Justice by the University of Maryland School of Social Work (2011), named 2012 Social Worker of the Year by the Minnesota Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers, 2012 Minnesota Social Worker of the Year, awarded by Minnesota Chapter National Association of Social Workers, Friend of School Social Work Award from the Minnesota School Social Work Association (2008), and Recognized as A Legend of School Social Work by the School Social Work Association of America (2006).
