As I embark on my tenure as President of SSWAA, I am often reminded at what an amazing profession we have chosen. The number of school social workers who are leaders in their schools, their districts and in their states, is a true inspiration. I think back on when I first became involved in our state organization and how overwhelmed I was by the knowledge and professionalism of the people around me. They continue to be my role models.
As each of us has our own strengths, so do our students. It's our job to figure out how to maximize their assets to help them be their best. We find the strengths in our families, in our staff, and in our communities. And then we bring them all together....after all, it takes a village! I love to hear about how different school social work looks across the nation. Some SSW only work with Special Education students, some with families, others in small towns having to cover 100 square miles between schools. Wherever we work, whatever we do on a daily basis, I know that we all hold the whole child as the focus, while bolstering their strengths and overcoming the barriers.
I admire the work that you all do!
