Take Action: Contacting Congress
Share |

Thank you for being interested in Taking Action!  Below find information about how to contact your Congressperson as well as a general template that can be adapted and used when contacting your Representative or Senator about a piece of legislation.

Here is how to TAKE ACTION!  It will only take about 10 minutes.

 1.    If you don't already know who your House member is, go to www.house.gov, put in your zip code, and you'll find your House member.

2.     If you don't already know who your Senators are, go to www.senate.gov

3.     Call the member's office.  You can reach every member through the Capitol switchboard at 202-225-3121 (Please use your home or cell phone.  DO NOT USE YOUR SCHOOL PHONE!).

 4.    Once you've reached the office, ask for the name and spelling of the staff person who handles education issues.

 5.    Then I would suggest that, rather than trying to explain this to the staff person on the phone or leaving a long detailed message, DIRECTLY EMAIL THE EDUCATION STAFF PERSON.  Again, please use your               personal email address.  All House staff email addresses follow this same formula:  firstname.lastname@mail.house.gov  or firstname.lastname@mail.senate.gov (example:  myrna.mandlawitz@mail.house.gov) .

The following is a template you can copy and use for your email message:

 "Dear Ms./Mr. ____________,

I am a school social worker in _________ School District in (city/town) and a member of the School Social Work Association of America.  I would like to let Representative/Senator _________ know about a new bill just introduced this month by ____________________, which would _______________________________.  The bill is  H.R. _______ /SB_____________ "Name of bill."

[Add "personal" story about why this piece of legislation is important to School Social Workers or how it helps us to meet the needs of  students & families, etc.    If you are not in a "high-need" district, talk about the state need and why it is important on the state level.  Make it one brief paragraph]

As a constituent of Representative/Senator  _________________, I urge him/her to consider co-sponsoring/supporting  this important bill.  [If you know the Rep has supported children's mental health or anything related, you might say thanks here].  I have attached a summary of the bill for your information.

I appreciate your considering co-sponsoring/supporting this bill. Please feel free to use me as a resource on issues that relate to this topic.

 Sincerely,

 Name

 6.    Wait a few days for a response.  If you don't hear anything, follow up with a phone call.

 7.    If you have any questions, please contact the SSWAA Legislative Staff:  Myrna Mandlawitz, Director of Government Relations,  Myrna@sswaa.org or Libby Nealis, Director of Policy & Advocacy, School Social Work Association of America      Libby@sswaa.org

THANK YOU for taking the time to advocate on behalf of yourself and school social workers.  Your efforts truly can make a difference!
