North Warren (Chestertown, NY) Adds School Social Worker

April 20, 2015

Superintendent Margaret Brady said the district is eliminating one math position through a retirement but adding a full-time social worker to address student social and emotional needs. The position will be shared between the elementary and secondary schools, according to an email from Brady.  Brady said the district is adding the social worker position to address more effectively the increasing social and emotional needs of its students. “Our school is geographically isolated and accessing social and emotional supports such as counseling services has been extremely challenging,” Brady said in an email. “The addition of a social worker will help us to evaluate children’s needs, especially in the area of mental health and interact daily with families, health care professionals and therapists.”

INVESTMENTS MADE BY Having Social Workers in Schools Will Bear Fruits Later

Erwin Leacock, principal of the Government Industrial School in Barbados stated:   " You can’t have 1 000 to 1 200 children in a school without a social worker [because] a guidance counsellor cannot fulfil those needs, and we need to invest in a programme of social work for the schools,"  "He explained that there was a need for persons to be educated and to appreciate the risk factors involved in dealing with delinquency, as some of the issues facing children were not new. Leacock stated that a lot of children experienced early emotional trauma, but did not receive the necessary support to address the situation. Therefore, he indicated, what was needed was a system of effective early assessment to recognise some of the signs present."   See more at:
