School social worker and SSWAA member Fran Lewandoski (Fairfax County, VA Public Schools) gave an excellent portrayal of the services SSWs provide everyday in schools across the country during a briefing for staff of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee, The briefing was sponsored by the National Alliance of Pupil Services Organizations (NAPSO). Fran personalized her presentation with a real-life example of a young man and his family whose lives she has positively impacted. The briefing was in anticipation of the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) and offered staff an opportunity to hear first-hand from specialized instructional support personnel, including, in addition to Fran, a school psychologist, school counselor, school nurse, physical therapist, music therapist, dance/movement therapist, and a speech-language pathologist. All participants made compelling cases for the need for these services. A number of Senate offices sent staff, and NAPSO will be following up with more information.
