SSWAA President Rochelle Leiber-Miller attends meeting at the White House

On Tuesday May 26, Ms. Leiber-Miller attended a meeting with several members of President Obama’s Education Team. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the recent hearings related to ‘Allegations of Abusive and Deadly Uses of Seclusion and Restraint in Public and Private Schools.
Last week, the U.S. Government Accountability Office released a report that found hundreds of allegations that schoolchildren had been abused, and some even died because of inappropriate uses of seclusion and restraint in classrooms. Representative George Miller (D-CA), the chair of the House Education Committee testified at a hearing related to this report. “After the hearings, the Obama administration indicated it plans to meet with stakeholders to address these abuses”. The meeting that Ms. Leiber-Miller went to was attended by over twenty-five child advocacy groups. President Obama’s representatives were interested in the opinions of these groups in relation to seclusion and restraint.
