2010 Awardee: Dr. Andy Frey

Dr. Andy Frey, Associate Professor, Kent School of Social Work, University of Louisville, was today awarded the Gary Lee Shaffer Award for Academic Contributions to the Field of School Social Work in a ceremony held today at the SSWAA annual conference in St Louis Missouri. Dr. Frey was nominated by his peers and colleagues and selected by a committee of SSWAA members to receive this prestigious award. As a long time School Social Worker and School Social Work faculty member, this award acknowledges Dr. Frey for his leadership, scholarship, academic contributions and high regard among students and faculty at the University of Louisville. Dr. Terry L. Singer, Dean of the Kent School of Social Work told SSWAA “Andy is a high quality, high energy guy. We love having him on our faculty.”
The Gary Lee Schaffer Award for Academic Contributions to the Field of School Social Work has been established by SSWAA as an annual memorial award to be given in recognition and remembrance of Dr. Schaffer who was a senior faculty member at the University of North Carolina. Passing away in 2009, Gary greatly inspired his students, his peers and the profession of School Social Work with his dedication and his passion. Attending the ceremony today and presenting the award to Dr. Andy Frey was Denise Shaffer, Gary Shaffer’s wife and herself a social worker. Denise expressed how important this award is to her family and Gary Schaffer’s legacy.
The School Social Work Association of America is honored to be able to recognize Dr. Andy Frey with this award today and is greatly saddened with Dr. Gary Lee Shaffer’s passing as one of School Social Work’s premier Academic Contributors.
