Dr. Martell Teasley, Associate Professor, School of Social Work, Florida State University, was today awarded the Gary Lee Shaffer Award for Academic Contributions to the Field of School Social Work in a ceremony held at the SSWAA annual school social work conference in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Dr. Teasley was nominated by his peers and colleagues and selected by a committee of SSWAA members to receive this prestigious award. As a long time School Social Work faculty member, this award acknowledges Dr. Teasley for his leadership, scholarship, academic contributions and high regard among students and faculty at Florida State University. Dr. Nicholas Mazza, Dean of the School of Social Work told SSWAA “Martell is a quality, high energy faculty member. We love having him on our team and greatly respect the work he has done on behalf of School Social Work.”
The Gary Lee Schaffer Award for Academic Contributions to the Field of School Social Work has been established by SSWAA as an annual memorial award to be given in recognition and remembrance of Dr. Schaffer who was a senior faculty member at the University of North Carolina. Passing away in 2009, Gary greatly inspired his students, his peers and the profession of School Social Work with his dedication and his passion. Attending the ceremony today and presenting the award to Dr. Tinsley was Denise Shaffer, Gary Shaffer’s widow and herself a social worker. Denise expressed how important this award is to her family and Gary Schaffer’s legacy.
The School Social Work Association of America is honored to be able to recognize Dr. Martell Teasley with this award today. We continue to be saddened with Dr. Gary Lee Shaffer’s passing as one of School Social Work’s premier Academic Contributors and hope that this award in his honor will inspire and give hope to School Social Workers everywhere.
