Advocacy in Action: Voicing a Need for Change
Over the years, the Summer Leadership and Legislative Institute, held in Washington, DC, has provided many opportunities for networking and dialogue among school social work leadership from across the country. In addition to training leaders in advocacy skills, participants get the latest information from our Government Relations Director Myrna Mandlawitz focused on legislation in Congress relevant to school social work and Administration activities impacting the professional and students and their families.  Participants also learn about SSWAA's involvement and collaborations with other national organizations and coalitions that support School Social Work and the students, schools and families we serve.

The highlight for attendees is always our annual "Hill Breakfast" and lobbying visits to our Representatives and Senators on Capitol Hill.. This is a great opportunity to connect with SSWAA board members, learn about legislative trends in Washington DC and to deliver the SSWAA legislative message to Congress. Now is the time to let your voice be heard!  With a new Administration, your voices in Washington are more important than ever!  If you  want to become an active advocate for School Social Work, push for increased mental health services for students, and explain why more funding is critical to assist our students in addressing barriers to learning at the local, state and/or national levels, this is your opportunity!

***In order to be prepare you for your experience on Capitol Hill, Myrna Mandlawitz, SSWAA Director of Government Relations, will present a webinar on Monday, July 17, 7:00 PM EDT.  Getting a headstart on training for our Hill visits will free up time at the institute for other activities.  We encourage you to participate.  However, if you can't hear the webinar "live," it will be recorded so you can listen to it before traveling to Washington.
We're looking forward to have a least a team of 2 from every State!   See you in Washington, and wear those walking shoes!
