June 11, 2015
Meeting Location:  Mongolia Children’s Palace, Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia

Meeting notes:

This meeting began at 16:30 on June 11, 2015

Countries represented:

China, Japan, Mongolia, Singapore, Sweden, United States of America. Australia was in the audience but declined to join the above countries directly and preferred to be in observer status.

The meeting began with a discussion of the informal meeting process which is that each country will have an opportunity to make a presentation promoting their country as host for the next International School Social Work conference. At the conclusion of the presentation(s), the countries that were present and participating had a discussion about the merits of the proposal and this was followed by a “show of hands” vote after all discussion was concluded.

China offered to host the next International Conference in either 2017 or 2018 and they made a very nice and very complete PowerPoint presentation.   Discussions centered on the excellent conference facilities that are available in Beijing and also included the fact that both Hong Kong and Taiwan would be invited to actively participate in this conference. Federal support of the conference would be a benefit and may help relative to expenses. Language translation issues were brought up and the group was assured that there would be language translation services available. This conference would be sponsored by the China Association for Social Work Education and the School Social Work Professional Committee, established in 2012.

Some concern was expressed about having the next International Conference in Asia since currently we were in Mongolia and a previous International Conference took place in Seoul, Korea. It was agreed by those present and participating that every effort would be made to have the next several International School Social Work conferences in either Europe, North America or other non-Asian countries and that moving these conferences around the globe every few years would give more School Social Workers the opportunity to attend an International Conference sometime during their professional careers.

When all discussions had been completed and all questions were expressed and addressed to the satisfaction of the participants, a vote was held and it was unanimous that the next International School Social Work Conference would be held in Beijing China, in either 2017 or 2018. Details to be determined by the two Chinese Professional organizations listed above in coming months.

Meeting Concluded at 17:30

Respectfully submitted, Frederick Streeck MSW ACSW C-CSWS
